LPG kit design for two wheelers

Today cars are seen running on LPG; but can bikes and scooters run on them too? Yes it can, though not that popular but there are LPG gas converter kits available nowadays. Using LPG instead of petrol is both economical and also good for the environment. This blog topic gives an idea on what aspects to look after while designing a LPG kit for two wheelers for your mechanical engineering project for the semesters.

There are various advantages in converting your two wheeler to run on LPG, some of them are mentioned below:

  • Cost factor : LPG is cheaper than petrol
  • Better distribution in the cylinder: Gasoline is sprayed into the engine cylinder to mix with air. But the air-gasoline mix distribution might not be uniform because gasoline is a liquid. LPG on the other hand can make a better uniformly distributed fuel mixture. This enhances thermal efficiency.
  • Knock resistant
  • Its octane rating is more than petrol
  • Clean: LPG is a clean gas; it doesn’t yield carbon when on burning. In case of gasoline each burning leaves a minute amount of carbon in your engine cylinder, which gradually might cause malfunctioning of the engine.
  • LPG burns faster, hence cold starting the engine is not a problem
  • Provides better mileage than gasoline
  • Reduced wear and tear
  • Increases the engine life and exhaust system.

From an engineer’s point of view here we discuss about a design project where you design the tank that carries gasoline. Unlike cars two wheelers don’t have enough spaces for accommodating gas tanks. So while designing anything for a two wheeler, you need to take into account the space concern; which is needed for gas tank as well as the conversion kit.

A simple option is to replace the fuel tank of the two wheeler but in several cases the tank is fitted visibly outside and that makes the entire vehicle look very ugly. Such readymade kits are available in the market but for engineers this project does focus on designing a compact tank which could be fitted on all brands of two wheelers irrespective of their designs. For instance if you design an LPG tank for Bajaj pulser it might not fit the design of a Honda CBR.

Only a universal design could have any market viability, and if you can explain the scope of your design in the market this project will definitely sound way better earning you more marks. This is one such reason why commercially available gas kits are placed outside the bikes. So we hope that you can better work at this.
