Why Cooling Capacity Unit Of Home Refrigerator And Air Conditioner Is different

We often wonder why the capacity of a domestic refrigerator and Air Conditioner (AC) are so different though both are refrigeration system. In this blog topic we shall discuss some of the key differences between the two.

So what is the main difference with respect to the cooling capacity?

A major difference between the two is the point of supply for the gases. Refrigerator has gases installed in a series of tubes. In old ones, the gas was CFC, but since it has harmful effects on people, so refrigerators do not contain them anymore. HFC-134a is the sole gas used as a coolant in refrigeration systems. AC systems use built-in chemicals, but also air from the room. In built gases in an air conditioning unit cools air that circulates through the unit; the unit next redistributes the cooled air in the room.

ACs have circulation systems created to project cool air away from the units while refrigeration units have circulation systems designed to retain the coolant in a confined space. Refrigerators circulate cool liquids and gases through a series of tubes and vents. Cool air from within a refrigerator is taken into a compressor that recycles the gas through the tubes. ACs, while employing tubes in the coolant system, has fans for air dispersal. Unlike refrigerators, that keep gases contained to a pre-determined space, ACs disperse cool air throughout areas of unknown volume.

The capacity of domestic refrigerator is generally rated in ‘Litre’.Thus, litre capacity indicates the volume or space to be cooled by the domestic refrigerator.

On the other hand, the AC capacity is given by the term ‘Ton of refrigeration’. Now ton is actually a name given to the amount of heat to be extracted from 1 short ton (907.18474 kg) of water at 0 degree C to convert it to the ice at the same temperature in 24 hours.

In simple words, refrigeration rate required freezing 1 ton of water to ice in 24 hours at 0 degrees C. 

Thus, 1 Ton of refrigeration = 1 TR = (latent heat of ice)x(amount of water)/time 

= 334 x 907.18474 /(24 x 3600)

= 3.50 kW

Hence it is clear that the refrigeration system has a different capacity term viz. ‘Litre’ (Space to be cooled) and ‘Ton’ (energy to be removed for cooling)

Liquid Droplets Can Connect Two moving Parts Without Any Solid Contacts

Researchers in MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) developed an approach to use liquid droplets to link two moving parts without any solid contacts. A breakthrough innovation which makes several things possible in the field of MEMS (Micorelectromechanical Systems).

Te mentions, MEMS are tiny machines designed for industrial uses in electronic industry like manufacturing of chips and rerlated components. As wear and failure of small machines is a big issue. Since the connections between two moving parts are very tiny in such machines they fail easily. By finding an alternative approach to such solid connections; the industry is taking a huge raise.

The applied principle in this approach is very common. It is known that certain surfaces tend to repel water while others attract. The water droplets on a hydrophobic surface tend to stay there while those on a hydrophilic surface tend to spread evenly. In case of the former, the height of a water droplet will be much larger than a droplet in the latter case. By altering this water -water repulsion or attracting qualities; the water droplets could be moved.

In case of certain dielectric surfaces the above qualities could be altered by passing small amount of electricity. Then you will get a water droplet that changes its shape and size when you change or flip a switch. To say, the concept is nothing new but the researchers had the idea to put it in for a practical application like moving a platform. They put a tiny platform on top of two water droplets and changed its height by changing the flow of electricity to the platform on which they are placed. The same method could be applied to move the droplets from one position to another or tilt them. And a simple experiment made a gateway to a new era of MEMS.

Avoiding wear and failure in MEMS machines are advantages of this experiment and also proves as a method to make precise movements. The initial experiments will help control the platform with a precision of 10 microns. This has nice scope in many industries where precise movements are needed, for instance laser related experiments.

Another advantage is that it is vibration resistant when compared to solid connections. As the experiment is very simple; we can speculate that it wouldn’t be long before when we see them in real world applications.

In Many Ways CADCAM Press Is Losing Eminence!

What is objective writing?…Well being true in your words, not doing product fanboi’s and giving honest review. Rhino CAM

A video has been circulating that tells about Rhino done by Adam OHern who goes by the name of Cadjunkie. It was done a few years ago and it really takes the point that Rhino solids and filleting sucks! In the video Ohern claims that he can’t use Rhino without SpaceClaim. Adam’s got that right because it’s absolutely ridiculous that after all these years yet , Rhino still doesn’t have decent solids or decent filleting.

Creo Parametric

As per CAD/CAM press, Creo Parametric has been reported as being a total redo of Pro/E Wildfire with a new easy to use Windows Ribbon user interface. But was that the truth?…Nope!

Creo Parmetric user interface is a little more than a cosmetic rehab of Pro/E Wildfire, which in turn itself was a cosmetic rehab of Pro/E.

Once again PTC couldn’t deliver what they promised to deliver with Creo.

SolidWorks Blogs Are Dying

With the dying SolidWorks blogs and the leading SolidWorks “fog blog” that Matt Lombard runs is ruining the CAD/CAM stories. The fog blog is stale because of Matt’s censorship and besides being an arrogant and pompous; he’s a manufacturing blockhead. Several SolidWorks users posting to SolidWorks own forum have pointed this out to Lombard. His advice is to go to his own fog blog and rant and rave in an environment where the control in his hands.

For years Matt Lombard touted Mastercam as the leading solution for CAM programming on Usenet despite the fact that he doesn’t have any real machining experience and couldn’t machine his way out of a paper bag if he tried. The reality is that Mastercam is a cobbled together legacy code product with tons of problems and is no close to market leading technology. Mastercam is currently being dumped by long time Mastercam customers who’ve had enough of the bugs that never got fixed, the horrible treatment they recieve from CNC Software where the dealer always comes before the end user, etc.

On the SolidWorks’ fog blogs like that of Matt Lombards’, products that are much more advanced than Solidworks, like Missler’s TopSolid CADCAM 7, with its built in PDM, good configurations, their own 2D and 3D constraint manager, etc. don’t ever get discussed.
